Briefly describe the research project you are planning to contribute to and lead as a postdoctoral associate at Virginia Tech. What is the problem you are addressing? What is the expected impact of your work?
My research is on coding theory and quantum error-correction. Quantum information offers a new paradigm of computation and quantum algorithms can help to reduce the computational time of some tasks, however quantum states are particularly sensitive to certain types of errors due to their very nature. This leads to the need of error correction for quantum information, but a fundamental feature of quantum physics makes it impossible to use our classical schemes. However, it was proven by Calderbank, Shor and Steane that using an extra feature of the quantum particles, called entanglement, it was possible to protect quantum information. Since then, several schemes have been proposed to protect quantum information using several algebraic structures to describe the properties of these quantum error-correcting codes. My work is to describe further properties of these systems and to design new ones that outperform the existing ones to guarantee reliable communication between quantum computers.
Why did you choose to pursue postdoctoral training at Virginia Tech?
Virginia Tech is building a research group on coding theory, quantum information and cybersecurity, led by Dr. Gretchen Matthews. This work is in alignment with the Commonwealth Cyber Initiative (CCI) Southwest Node, part of a state effort to transform Virginia into a global hub for cybersecurity research. I had the opportunity to work with Dr. Matthews in the past and am excited to participate in her group more closely as a Presidential Postdoctoral Fellow. I believe participating in the research projects taking place in Dr. Matthews group as well as within the larger CCI network will help take my professional career to the next level.
What are you most looking forward to as you begin in this fellowship at Virginia Tech?
I am looking forward to starting the proposed project for the fellowship as well as joining the diverse and exciting research environment at Virginia Tech. I have had some discussions with my colleagues in the group and am excited to join a friendly and creative environment to expand not just my professional network, but also my social network.
