Commonly Used Components

Although the “Toggle Side Bar > Components” area shows a lot of different components for use, there are only a  few we recommend using on our webpages.

Call to Action - Link

The Call to Action - Link component is used for adding a button to a page to encourage the user to click it.

Key examples of this use is at the bottom of a webpage having a button that takes users to specific Research Administration Systems, or to “Register for ..” an event with a link to another webpage.

Container

The container component is used to widen the text component to the full width of the default content pane, and can be used as a way to group a section of content together (such as - you can place multiple text components, image components, etc. inside of a container).  If you do have experience with HTML, you can look at a container component as a parent <div> tag for a section of content.

Image

At this time, images should be edited and uploaded by the Research Communications team.

If you have a photo that you would like to feature on a page, please provide the photo to the Research Communications team via the web request form and note the page that it should be featured on and where.

List

The list component can be used to pull a page’s child pages as links, or to pull in feeds from other sections.   A feed example would be pulling in articles from VT News.

Multi Columns

This component allows editors to split the content pane into multiple columns.  It allows for 2, 3, 4, and six columns.

Multi Tabs / Accordion

This component will allow you to create a tabbed interface or an accordion that a user can click on to see more content.

In our content, we rarely use the tabbed interfaces due to usability issues.

Text

This component will go inside of a container component and will allow you to type our or paste text content.  There are controls within the component that will allow you to format text as required (headings, ordered/unordered lists, paragraphs, etc.).

Although you can add images if you know the HTML code, we recommend that you use an image component for adding images.
