Terms Used in the Web Style Guide

The following terms below may be commonly used across the various guides and tutorials in this section.

Homepage

Referring to the initial page of a website, the starting page.  This will normally have an intro lead paragraph that describes what the website is for (such as describing the mission of a unit), highlighted content or initiatives, and feeds from the Office of Research and Innovation Events page, Research Administration news page, etc.

Landing Page

Referring to the initial page of a section. Can be at times interchangeable with “Homepage,” however Landing Page is used more at the secondary level.

Microsite

A small website branching off of a main website.  Examples within www.research.vt.edu include:

Page Properties

Editing area in Ensemble that allows user to manipulate design elements of a page. This includes enabling/disabling a right column, meta description, navigation text, page title, and more depending on the template used.

Page Tag

Refers to a tag that can be applied to a created web page for sorting/organization purposes.  An example is that events created under the Office of Research and Innovation Events section have tags for the host of the event and the type of event.

Search Engine Optimization (SEO)

Search Engine Optimization refers to work that goes into creating page content, and properties of the web page that are set that increase ratings in result placement in search engines.

HTML Tag

Refers to the HTML tag that will be used in formatting.Commonly used tags are:

  • <p> Paragraph
  • <h2> Heading 1 through <h5> Heading 5
  • <ul> Unordered List and <ol> Ordered List
  • <strong> for Bold and <em> for Italics
