Occupational Health and Safety Program

The goal of the Occupational Health and Safety program (OHS) at Virginia Tech is to ensure that all persons who have contact with animals are made aware of the potential hazards of working with animals, and of procedures and equipment that can be used to reduce their risk of exposure to specific hazards.

In order to be permitted to use vertebrate animals in teaching and research here at Virginia Tech, one must comply with a variety of federal laws, regulations, and policies. Many of those regulations and guidelines require the establishment of an occupational health and safety program such as this for individuals who work with animals or come in contact with their tissues or wastes.

Before beginning work with any new animal species and/or additional zoonotic organisms, you should revisit this website and view the applicable fact sheets for the new animal species or zoonotic agents that you will be working with so that you to maintain a high level of Occupational Safety awareness.

For your own protection you are advised to discuss any of your additional health and safety questions and concerns with your supervisor, your research laboratory or facility manager, Environmental Health and Safety or the IACUC office.

Please log in, if applicable, and review this website to complete this training requirement. You will be required to revisit and review this site every three years as part of the Virginia Tech IACUC mandatory animal user training.
